Green do well in city council races

The Green Party made a strong showing in city council races across the US on Election Day, November 3, 2009.

Greens now make up a majority on the Fairfax Town Council in Marin County, California, where first-place finisher Pam Hartwell-Herrero joins incumbents Lew Tremaine and Larry Bragman. Fairfax becomes the fourth municipality in the US to have a Green majority, following Arcata and Sebastopol in California and New Paltz in New York.

“The strong showing of Green candidates in 2009, especially among municipal candidates where Greens won 35% of all such races entered, shows that voters believe that Greens not only have good ideas but can govern effectively. When voters are given a positive alternative to the status quo, they will vote for it.” said Green Party co-chair Mike Feinstein, a former Mayor and City Councilmember in Santa Monica, California.

In Maryland, Dan Robinson won re-election to the Takoma Park City Council while Christine Nagle won election to the College Park City Council.

Long time party member Geroge Gluck has entered the special election to replace Don Praisner in the Montgomery County Council's 4th District. The Democratic and Republican primaries will be on April 21 and the general election will be on May 19.

Take a look at George's website, donate some money. Also take a look at the summary of the Audubon Society forum that George took part in.
Help Elect Malik Rahim to COngress

We have an incredible opportunity.

Congressional elections for the 2nd District in New Orleans , LA will take place Dec 6th and Malik Rahim, founder of Common Ground Relief, is running in for Congress. Malik's Democratic opponent, incumbent William Jefferson was indicted earlier this year for corruption. We have the chance to put a Green in Congress who will stand up for people over profits.

Malik Rahim has a lifelong commitment to justice and an extensive track record of transformative community building. Under Malik's leadership, the Common Ground Collective opened the first free health clinic in the city of New Orleans, helped reopen schools, gutted over 3,000 homes that needed repair in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, and provided direct services to nearly 200,000 returning residents. He is former Black Panther, co-founder of the anti-death penalty group "Pilgrimage for Life," with Sister Helen Prejean. On November 12, Malik Rahim received the Thomas Merton Award for his work in community organizing and providing relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

Giving now, and getting others to do the same will ensure Malik has the resources to purchase airtime for more radio ads -the first ads start today at $26 each. Your donation will help buy more yard signs, lapel signs and leaflets and ensure the campaign has the resources to reach every voter!

Help make calls from your home to voters in Malik's district. Help build our virtual phone bank at Green Change. The more people we talk to, the more VOTES we get!

Learn more about Malik at : www.votemalik.com.

New Orleans residents are tired of being ignored and abandoned by the federal government and betrayed by their elected officials. Electing Malik Rahim, a remarkable Green, to Congress will transform the political landscape. We CAN do this with your help! Please donate generously today. A gift of $300 will allow us to buy one day of radio ads, $150 will buy yard signs for 100 households. $75 will print 100 door hangers to get out the vote. A gift of $35 or $20 will make a difference, so please do what you can today.

Showing of "American Blackout"

There will be a showing of "American Blackout" hosted by Bruce Backer on Sunday Sept 21 at 7724 Maple Avenue #13, Takoma Park, MD 20912

American Blackout critically examines the contemporary tactics used to control our democratic process and silence voices of political dissent. Many have heard of the alleged voting irregularities that occurred during the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004. Until now, these incidents have gone under- reported and are commonly written-off as insignificant rumors or unintentional mishaps resulting from an overburdened election system. American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of voter disenfranchisement from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004 while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Mckinney not only took an active role investigating these election debacles, but has found herself in the middle of her own after publicly questioning the Bush Administration about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The state CC is finalizing the procedures for our primary which will be held sometime in March. The assembly will be held either in April or May, depending on when we can secure the space at Towson that we had last year.

There are two people who have registered for the 8th Congressional District; Brian Crider, votecrider.com and Gordon Clark (webpage pending). They will be attending the local meeting in Gaithersburg tomorrow, so make an effort to come out.

"Annapolis Capital Punishment" says Greens show surprising strength

The blog Annapolis Capital Punishment takes note of the fact that the Greens showed "surprising strength" in yesterday's Baltimore City elections.

Though the Democrats swept the elections, Bill and Maria got the strongest second place finishes. In fact their combined vote total was greater than the seven Republicans who ran.

Next up is Karen Jennings' race in a special election to fill and Annapolis alderman seat.

As Capital Punishment notes, "WARD TWO VOTERS IN ANNAPOLIS----TAKE NOTE!! You get to vote for Alderman in a race with the three (shall I say it here?) major parties come December."
