On the Mohammed Cartoon Controversy…Well, Sort Of
by Angry White LiberalSomewhere on the web — it might have been WaPo — someone complained about not being able to find an actual image of the cartoon. I, myself, haven’t been able to find a great image, but below is a link to an image.

Like a lot of people, I do have mixed feelings about this.
I understand what prompted the cartoons. A writer being unable to find an illustrator for his book because everyone was afraid of repercussions is a terrifying thing. The fact that there have been threats of violence in return is unpardonable.
On the other hand, the way it was handled does strike me as xenophobic and reactionary. Some of those cartoons look to me like ‘hate speech’.
It does strike me as a publicity stunt far more than an attempt at fostering understanding.

I would argue argue that the extremists and bigots on both sides of the issue are provoking each other. Just go to the WaPo blog that I have linked to above, and you’ll see what I mean.
