There is a private organization in California called Calcars that is developing methods for converting hybrid cars into “plug in” hybrids. It seems that the 2004 and 2005 Priuses are particularly adaptable since there is a space below the battery already there where you can fit on a lithium battery. With this you can drive for the first 30 miles on battery power alone and then switch over to the hybrid engine. When you get home you just plug in the lithium battery to recharge. If you only make short trips you use no gasoline at all. On longer trips Calcars reports getting 100 mpg. They have a kit developed for converting 04 and 05 Priuses but no word yet on when it will be available.
